EMERGENCE OF TRANSFORMERS
Every generation must out of relative obscurity discover its mission, fulfil it or betray it. Frantz Fanon.
Fifty-one
years ago, after all denials and negotiations, Nigeria was granted the
freedom by her colonial masters the British Government to become an
independent Nation; the freedom to govern herself, build her economy and
most especially plan and build her future.
Fifty –one
years after our independence, it appears that the dreams of our founding
fathers have not been realize; the dream for a great, prosperous and
peaceful nation. The dream for a true giant of Africa; the pride of the
world
After diligently studying and analyzing the developmental
stages our country have experienced; I can boldly declare that; change
and transformation is in the air
I am happy to let you
know that the journey to the transformation and development of Nigeria,
the journey of a new Nigeria has begun. We are the generation that will
transform Nigeria
Change is the only constant thing in life. No
wonder life is in phases. It moves from phase to phase. The world we are
is also in stages; moving from stage to stage.
Alvin Toffler in
his book; Third Wave noted that the world has existed in three different
stages: the agrarian age; the industrial age and the technological age.
We are right now in the technological age, otherwise known also as the
information age.
In Nigeria, we are also in a new change of
generation; A generation different from that of our fathers. There have
existed three kinds of generations in Nigeria. These generations played
different role in the development of our nation. To understand the very
significant role these generations played in their time, a definition of
generation is most appropriate.
The word generation are closely
linked to genus which means race or kind; and generare which means to
bring forth. Therefore generation means to bring forth a particular race
or kind. The role a particular race or kind plays is quite different
from the other race or kind.
In nation building, each generation
is designed for a specific task or assignment in fulfilling this task.
They are endowed with the talents, abilities, potentials, motivations,
ideas, insights, and concepts it needed to accomplish their specific
tasks.
The greatest tragedy that can happen to a generation is
when its present generation of people fails to discover its mission and
fulfil it. Nations fails to achieve its dreams and fulfil its destiny
when the present generation fails to take or accept responsibility.
For
Nigeria to achieve its dreams and fulfil its destiny, each generation
must play its role, discover its mission and fulfil it.
Just as I
said earlier, three kinds of generation have existed in Nigeria; the
first was the generation of liberation, which existed from the official
creation of Nigeria to our independence year i.e. from 1914-1960. They
fought for the independence of our nation: the freedom to govern
ourselves, make our own laws, build our own economy and most especially
plan and build our future. This generation of people indeed fulfilled
its mission. On October 1, 1960, Nigeria became an independent nation.
Another
phase of generation of people that emerged after the generation of
liberation is the generation of revelation. This generation of people
revealed the great potentials and resources Nigeria was endowed with.
They existed between the year 1960 and 2000. The true greatness and
abundant potentials of Nigeria and Nigerians were discovered in this
generation. Nigeria was seen as the next big thing to happen. It came to
the knowledge of the world that indeed Nigeria was truly blessed, not
just in natural resources but both in human and intellectual. Nigeria
was referred to as the Garden of Eden.
Chinua Achebe himself
observed the potentials of Nigeria when he stated in his book; The
Trouble with Nigeria: ‘I believe that Nigeria is a nation favoured by
providence. I believe there are individuals as well as nations, who on
account of peculiar gifts and circumstances are commandeered by history
to facilitate mankind’s advancement. Nigeria is such a nation. The vast
human and material wealth with which she is endowed bestows on her a
role in Africa and the world which no one else can assume or fulfil’
The
activities and deeds of this generation truly revealed the potentials
and greatness in Nigeria. Therefore they fulfilled their mission.
Nigeria
has produced another generation of people known as the generation of
transformation. They are destined to transform Nigeria. They will
leapfrog Nigeria into the league of advanced nations. We are the ones
we have been waiting for. We are the change we seek; we are the change
we need.
Right now we are in a defining moment in the development
of our nation, the actions and steps we take now can either make or mar
our future. There are signs of transformation going on. The
transformation vehicle has begun with the entertainment industry
specifically in Nollywood and our Music sector. Let other industries and
sectors wake up. We can
Our generation must accept great
responsibility in building our nation. Every hand must be on deck. Let’s
stop thinking of what Nigeria and our government has not done for us;
rather lets think on what we can do the make Nigeria a great nation. We
are the ones we have been waiting for.
